"Oooh, what is it?" ZETO eyes the PARCEL as she enters the room and sits down on the indicated CUSHION. It's somewhat rare for them to get FAMILY TIME like this during the day - at least one of her parents is usually busy running the CAFÉ, either front-of-house or in the KITCHEN. Both are, of course, masterful CHEFS, a talent which Zeto herself has sadly failed to inherit from either. Still, neither of them share her talent with MACHINES, and it is thanks to her that the PASTRY OVEN runs as efficiently as it does, and the coffee machine is now SECOND TO NONE. "You'll have to open it and find out," one of them replies - which one doesn't matter to our BIRTHDAY GIRL, who is already reaching for the parcel and opening the CARD attached to it. " HAPPY BIRTHDAY" it proclaims, in highly decorated LETTERS; inside she reads " To our very special daughter, Have a great day! Love, Mum & Mum" She puts the card to one side and takes the purple-and-gold package in both hands, turning it about, feeling its weight, trying to guess what might be INSIDE. Then she rests it down on her lap and begins to very carefully unwrap it, savouring the ANTICIPATION but eager to get inside. Her parents look on with SHARED EXCITEMENT, both keen to see their daughter's REACTION when she sees what they've got her. Finally the wrapping paper is OFF, and she turns the box over... and her eyes go WIDE. She's speechless. She can hardly believe it. Her very own MECHA-TORQ® AutoSpanner™ - the Mecha-Torq AutoSpanner, LIMITED EDITION, complete with companion TOOLBELT and handy carrying pouch! Wow. The things she could DO with this, the things she could MAKE... She turns to her parents and HUGS them each in turn, her brain still trying to catch up and remember how to form WORDS. All she can get out is "Wow... thank you!"

Aki:You can indeed claim the SBURB bonus XP. It is immediately added to your total for the quest. If something cool happens on the way, you can treat it as a Discovery action, or you can decide on and narrate something cool to encounter and claim that as Discovery. "That's the lot, miss. Are you waiting on something? It's probably been held up in the sorting; they'll probably still have it at the post office. You know where that is?" At your affirmative nod, she flicks the reins and the cart trundles off again. -==>On the way to the Post Office, you spot an unusual number of rats standing on tall buildings, cloaks to the wind. They pose dramatically, noses into the breeze. They are looking at... - a disturbance in the waters of Big Lake
- nothing more sinister than the rising sun, yet the sense of foreboding deepens
- a masked man in biker leathers, blood dripping from his hands
- a twinkle far up in the sky
- or something else...?
Feel free to choose and narrate; if appropriate you can take a Discovery XP action. If you do, I'll add it to the pot on the XP Pot thread. Zorro:You dash across the roofs on your NOBLE STEED. The wind whistles in your fur, and you approach the OLD CLOCK TOWER. There is a SHADOWY FIGURE skulking around the roof, and its shadow has great claws and a tail - a CAT SPIRIT possessing an unwary human, no doubt. The door to the clock tower is BARRED from the inside. As you arrive, there is a resounding BOOM sound as the clock tolls the hour. Dust shakes from the eaves of the tower, and the figure leaps into the air in shock. Amy:The SBURB MANUAL starts with the usual blurb about what the game is about: "Players (you and your friends) take the role of exiled Heroes who have been driven from their rightful Land by a great evil at the start of the game. These Players are scattered on two kingdoms that are at war on a promised land. The goal of the game is for the Players to reach the promised land, Skaia, in order to claim for their own the very thing that Derse and Prospit are fighting for, the Ultimate Reward." The next few pages go over some basic interface for what looks like a Sims-style house-building game. It looks like- It's at this moment that a warped BIRD squawks out from underneath your bed. You recall a bird like this in your dreams last night; you must have dragged him back with you by accident. It starts flapping around your room like a complete feathery asshole, then spots the shiny disc and swoops down, grabbing it in its beak. You may claim 1 SBURB XP for "lose your copy of the game disc at the last moment". Zeto:Mum gets up with a groan as her knees creak. "Well, if you don't like it we can always take it back..." she jokes. "All right, all right. What do you want for breakfast? One of us should open the place up." A good-natured ARGUMENT quickly ensues over which of your mothers is going to be the one to open the shop and who'll stay with you, with the outcome that all three of you move to the KITCHEN... where the COFFEETRON has sprung a leak. With most coffee machines, this wouldn't be a problem, but high-pressure steam joints can be dangerous if you're not careful. Fortunately, with your new Mecha-Torq AutoSpanner, LIMITED EDITION, you can sort it out in a matter of moments. Everything settles into a comfortable daily routine after that. J3-NNY is sitting at the table, doing SOMETHING NAUTICAL on the INTERNET, when she speaks up again. "Strange. My Weather Reporting Appears To Also Be Malfunctioning. Today Has A Predicted 514% Chance Of Meteor Showers."

A beaming smile splits Matty's face, and he bends down and tosses the STEAMING BAG by his side in a slow arc to Rinley. "Careful, they're still hot." He leans back through the window to his COMPUTER DESK and his fingers dance over the keys to leave the BIRTHDAY GIRL a message. He's about to log off when the computer chirps as she responds! templeTabby began pestering spannEars <templeTabby> Hiya! Just wanted to say Happy Birthday and many happy returns. He grins and leans back so he is upside down, grabbing his ONESTRAP SHOULDER BAG with ZETO'S PRESENT in from off the floor, then straightens back up to sit on the windowsill. "Shall we?"

"You Have A New Message From Matty," chirps J3-NNY from across the room. "Ok, just a moment," Zeto replies, re-tightening up the last couple of nuts on the COFFEETRON with her new SPANNER. That done, she wipes her hands and turns to her robo-friend, who is already holding a KEYBOARD ready for her. She looks at the screen. templeTabby began pestering spannEars <templeTabby> Hiya! Just wanted to say Happy Birthday and many happy returns. I'm headed out shopping now (but will swing by yours with your present soon)
Well, he hasn't disconnected yet, so maybe she hasn't missed him. She starts TYPING. <spannEars> Hey! Still there? <sE> (also, thanks!) <tT> Yes! Ya just caught me. Cool. Well, after BREAKFAST then. "Going out somewhere then?" Her mother always seems to know what's going on. "Mm-hmm." "Well, not before you've had breakfast you're not. And don't stay out too late, you don't want to miss your birthday dinner..."
Zeto swallows her mouthful. " Five hundred and fourteen? Sure you haven't misplaced a decimal somewhere? Remind me later, I'll take a look at it." She finishes her breakfast and heads upstairs to get CHANGED, then back down to the basement to pick up her LAPTOP before heading out. "See you later!" she calls out as she sets off for the nearest STATION to catch a train to the STEAMWORKS.

Matty:Rinley rolls her eyes at you. "Finally!" she says, around the last mouthful of steamed bun. The two of you set off across the rooftops. The RAT HIGHWAYS aren't as well-maintained near Arcadia as they are on the docks, in Fortitude, but you're more than skilled enough to make up for it. As you near the Steamworks, you can see a huge crowd queueing outside GAMESTART. However, your attention is claimed by navigating the MAZE OF PIPES on its roof that occasionally attempt to fire you into the air. You sometimes suspect that it's a tsukogami, but if it is, it's very good at lying low when you investigate it. You nail the dismount with a delirious sicknasty back-flip-twist, and Rinley lands beside you with a whoop. Then she spots someone and drags you off to the side, behind a chromed-steel STEAM ORGAN. "Is he still out there?" You can see a figure about your age, dressed in DUBIOUSLY VICTORIAN APPAREL. He appears to be buying a mixture of gears, pipes, and glassware, but the cart he's pushing around also has some large lumps of MEAT in and a jar of EYEBALLS. A whispered conversation with Rinley establishes that it is LEONARDO DA MONTREAL, and she may have accidentally broken his INCOMPARABLE NIGHTMARE ENGINE. "We need to get out without him seeing us, or we'll be stuck here for hours listening to his ranting! As team leader, I can't let that slow us down!" Zeto:BREAKFAST is as delicious as usual. Oddly enough, after checking the OBSERVATORY DATA FEED, it looks like they are actually sending you a forecast of meteor showers. The bell rings a few times as the regulars come in for their breakfast or coffee, more than a few of them wishing you a happy birthday as well. --- The train journey is swift, and you reach the Steamworks, where a flock of well-meaning ADMIRERS almost instantly forms around you to admire your new AutoSpanner. One of them makes the mistake of calling it a wrench and is swarmed under in a way that reminds you eerily of a swarm of piranhas. As flattering as the attention might be, there's a lot of people, and they're getting in your way. Zorro:You use the distraction to close the distance between you, and as she spots you, she turns and you can see the SLITTED PUPILS that are a common sign of possession by CAT-SPIRITS. She bats at you with a hand, and you can see her fingernails are extended into claws. Normally CAT-SPIRITS won't hunt humans (well, humanoids), so there's something strange about this one. > ALLEGE "A hero?" She grins ferally. "The wind blows in from the lake. Shells open, crack, bleed. Time runs, like sand." The cryptic horseshit, however, is par for the course. > ANTICIPATE She seems to be tensing for an attack. This can be a Foreshadowing XP action in addition to everything else if you want.

Foreshadowing xp action it is then! I am combining the sunrise and the biker/other mysterious stranger. ... the FORTITUDE RATS are staring at nothing more sinister than the RISING SUN, yet Aki shouldn't shake a deepening sense of foreboding. The wind off the LAKE rose as she watched, her plaited ponytail lifting to ripple round her head like fire in the morning light. Something was coming, but this moment was important, PRECIOUS, even, in a way that was indescribably sad. But as much as she could feel the significance she couldn't tell why it was important, only that she needed to be here, to remember this. The world felt like it was waiting. Even the faint rumble of a motorbike's tyres didn't spoil the feeling of waiting, instead feeling like another piece that needed to be here, drawn in by the same force that had caught her. She spoke without turning round, "Something's coming, isn't it? But why do I feel like crying?"

"Hey!" Amy yells as the feathery thing ricochets around the room. "That's incredibly rude, you know." She manages to berate it before it manages to escape via WINDOW. With a put upon sigh, Amy watches as it flies off into the distance. The DISK is probably SCRATCHED if not shattered by the blasted bird. Her eyes narrow, clothes are swapped out for eminently more practical gear, laptop is shutdown and stashed, game peripherals stored in the BACKPACK. Then she stands, puts on her cycling gloves and glares out the window and into the distance. "One day, little bird, we will meet again. And on that day, there will be a reckoning the likes of which have never been seen in that kinda quaint place filled with dinosaurs that you came from... But yes! That triceratops will never talk to you again once he hears of what you have done... and... I will never invite you to a tea party ever again! You hear that? No cake for you Mr Thief!" Amy crosses her arms and harrumphs. Then looks around shiftily, before blushing and fidgeting sheepishly as she checks to see if anyone's noticed her little outpost. Nope. No one. Huzzah! Onwards, to ADVENTURE! Well, given how the Derse and Prospitt are totally a thing in this game she could probably pester the rest of the family until she found the one that made it. Or knew the guy that made it, or... Wait a second. It could be a Yatskaya, they were normally awake outside of Fortitude. Yeah... it could totally be a Yatskaya that was behind all this and that meant... asking around the SHRINE wasn't likely to get her anywhere. Or rather, it would probably get her stuck with WORK. So, step ONE, find RECEIPT. Step TWO, acquire MONEY. Step THREE, leave NOTE for AUNT. And then, onwards to SHOPS and ADVENTURE! (Also, Arcadia) > Executes steps ONE, TWO and THREE. Then EXITS (via BIKE) I think that I've done the flip-flopping of personal quest here for an XP. I'd like to think that I've done the Science, Faith and Sorcery action as well, but it doesn't quite fit.

ZorroShe's opposing you with an Intention of 2, so you end up with a final level of 3 - this gets you "do something correctly; impress the people around you". Your intention is still ongoing as of the end of this description, so you don't need to spend more Will and you can keep going with it. I just don't want to take away your opportunity to describe your GLORIOUS ESCAPE. Your quick action completely blows past her guard, even with her CATLIKE REFLEXES. You dart to the door and quickly make it through the RAT-DOOR, a small inset door large enough for a rat or a child but not big enough for the possessed woman to follow you through. Inside the ABANDONED CLOCK TOWER, there's a spiral staircase leading upwards. Coloured light spills through the windows, and you can hear the sound of muffled crying from upstairs. Heading up the stairs, you find EDONY hiding herself behind a crate of CLOCK PARTS and GEARS. She seems to be too scared to have noticed you yet. This might be a good time to do a Sympathetic Action XP Action. This looks like the following: Condition: You notice that someone’s frozen up from, e.g., overpowering emotion, a sudden change of context, a sudden spotlighting, or shock. Action: Try to comfort/reassure them, offer them sympathy, or physically help. AmyYou make good time to ARCADIA itself, but as you reach the entrance to the shopping district, a RED LIGHT stops you. As you wait for the lights to change, the BIRD lands a few meters away on a FIRE HYDRANT, your disk still clutched in its thieving beak. You chase after it, but it leads you a merry way through ARCADIA, until you almost crash into a horde of people outside GAMESTART. The queue is long, and with a sinking feeling you realise that most of them are clutching SBURB flyers. Aki"Because we won't be able to protect everyone. Say your farewells while you can.". The ANGEL guns the engine and drives off into the sunrise, making it hard to see where exactly he goes. You reach the POST OFFICE, which is actually a complex of small FISH WAREHOUSES that have been converted for the purpose. Conveyors take parcels and letters between the SORTING SHEDS, and this being Fortitude, there is RIGGING set up so that people can scale the sides of the building and reach the roof. Inside, Kasumi Miyamoto is the only one behind the desk, old in the way that only a Japanese matriarch seems able to be. She puts her book down as you approach the counter. "How can I help you, dear?" You explain your predicament, and she nods sagely. "You're welcome to have a look in the sorting rooms. We're a bit short-handed, so it might not have been sorted yet." Entering the SORTING ROOM at her direction, you see that it all funnels toward one desk at the centre of the room. A girl sits there, sorting parcels at a speed you find frankly unbelievable. They pour onto the desk in a constant stream and she is throwing them in all directions, somehow ending up on what you hope are the right conveyors without even a dent.

Zorro hops onto the box of clock parts, and wrinkles his nose at the young girl, before hopping down next to her and putting his paw on her sholder. "Do not be afraid," he says, then ends his sentance in what he beleives sounds like a word that might be the Spanish word for younger sister, or some other thing that you would comfortly end a sentance with. He dosn't actually speak Spanish, but she dosn't know that. "She can't get in. We can leave by the roof before she sees us." He tries his best to be a comforting presence, laying his head against her sholder for a moment, until she is ready to move.

Amy curses at being foiled once more by the blasted BIRD.
Standing in a QUEUE for long enough to get things sorted out or a new copy of the game would require something that resembled PATIENCE. She frowns in momentary thought, wishing that there was someone else around to TALK to... and possibly stand in the queue with. Hopefully, in time, the crowds will die down and she'll be able to get a replacement DISK (as the BIRD seems to have escaped, again).
It seems it is time for PLAN B (well, C, or possibly D, but who's counting). She is tangentially aware that it is someone's BIRTHDAY and even though she hasn't been invited to any kind of party that seems like a perfectly good excuse to purchase some CHOCOLATE and go looking for FRIENDS!
> Purchase a edible Birthday gift and cycle around in search of others.

Aki looked at the piles of paperwork and sighed, knowing precisely what was going to end up happening. "Hi, I'm here looking for a package of mine, Aki Vasili? It's one of the SBURB games." She paused for a moment, "Would you like me to help sort the pile that came from Horizon? You'd need to tell me what kind of piles I should put them in, but it would at least be something useful while I'm looking."

people act goofy about you and the Mecha-Torq AutoSpanner: Claimed Zeto is happy enough to show off her NEW SHINY for a bit, but she does have PLACES to be. When the ARGUMENT inevitably breaks out, therefore, she uses its cover to duck away, relying on her SUPERIOR GRACE to weave through the crowd. Time to find Matty and co. Superior Grace 1 + 2 Will for an Intention 3 to slip away and find Matty.
