Across Town, many young adults stand in their bedrooms. The day is the 15th of June, 2009, and there is cause for excitement. Not only is today one of their friend's BIRTHDAYS, it is also the highly-anticipated release of SBURB, the first COMPUTER GAME ever to have been developed entirely in Town. It's also a School holiday, despite its being a Monday. Principal Entropy II announced that he and the other teachers would be busy with "a matter of the gravest import", as well as the members of the SEED Club. (You're not sure if that includes the cat.) Thousands (well, hundreds at the very least) of children are eagerly awaiting their mail, or heading out to Arcadia to descend upon the electronics shops in the hopes of securing a copy. -==> |

A rat stands in its bedroom.
This paticular rat is an aspiring RAT KNIGHT and thus his INTERESTS revolve mostly around tales of CHIVELRY and HEROISEM. And also CHEESE, although he is somewhat ashamed at such a STERTYPICAL FOOD CHOICE.
He is very skilled at SWORDPLAY and ACROBATIC ENDEVORS, and thus his Strife Portfolio is allwats filled with a Swordkind seccubus, as well as a good old fssioned Fisticuff seccubus, validated by the Queensbry Rule Agress function. He is also very good at COOKING but incredibly shitty at SINGING
He works in the BOOK BINDING SHOP which is run by his uncle who is a SMUG KNOW IT ALL in the guise of a WISE OLD MAN. However, he knows that being raised by your uncle really increases your chances of being a protagonist so he puts up with it. He really enjoys the books with stories about heroes in them, but occasionaly can't help gnawing on the pages, a childish habbit he would be mortified if people found out about.
His Pesterchum handle is nibbleingQuestant and his typeing querk is to use all lowercase in grey
He plans to aquire the game disc through traveling across the rooftops to a wifi spot where he can download a pirated copy. He dosn't feel any guilt for staeling the game. It's not like games are important, like books are.

A young girl stands in her courtyard.
This particular girl is IRRITATED because her duties as a VASILI SHRINE MAIDEN means she has to be up despite it being a school holiday. She would rather be READING some interesting SCI-FI or FANTASY, or GEEKING OUT about the new game being released today with her friends. However her computer is VERY OLD and confined to her bedroom and her friends are probably asleep.
Meanwhile she is outside adding OUTSIDE DUST to LANTERN OIL. Usually she needs to make the oil before school but most of her duties occur in the evening when she does her PATROL LOOP around town, lighting torches to honour the WILL OF FIRE she is bonded to. She doesn't mind the long evening walk around FORTITUDE given she is ATHLETIC and usually finds interesting things or meets friends while doing so.
Being in the courtyard does mean that she can see the post box, where her copy of SBURB should be arriving by pre-order. Her GUARDIAN doesn't know this yet, but given they don't like SPENDING MONEY it's better then going to ARCADIA to get it, even if it would give her an excuse to visit the BIRTHDAY GIRL.

The BIRTHDAY GIRL is, at this moment, slumped over her workbench in the basement, asleep.
This TENKO girl is an aspiring ENGINEER with a particular talent for DEVIANT SCIENCE! She is also something of a MUSICIAN and is learning to play the FLUTE. Her TENKO HERITAGE also gives her an affinity for certain MAGICS, in her case the Tenko art of FIRE AND LIGHTNING. She also enjoys COOKING, though she is utterly TERRIBLE AT IT. When she's not at school in Horizon or busy in her workshop, she loves hanging out at the STEAMWORKS or just TINKERING WITH STUFF.
Right now she should be in her BEDROOM in the flat above her family's café in ARCADIA, but she had a late-night flash of INSPIRATION and just had to try it out. It seems she fell asleep waiting to see the RESULTS, leaving her workbench strewn with TOOLS. She will soon be woken either by J3-NNY, her ROBO-FRIEND, or by her PARENTS trying to wish her a happy birthday. She may instead be woken by someone trying to talk to her on PESTERCHUM where she uses the handle spannEars.

There is TEA and BREAKFAST, which is slightly annoying because that means it is MORNING. And not a school day. As a DREAMER and a SUSUNOV, she finds this combination unappealing. But this is a day of being AWAKE and FRIENDS and possibly GAMES. Or crashing a PARTY in the name of HUGS, FRIENDSHIP and CAKE.
She hasn't quite decided yet.
Until then there is the CAFFEINE TEA, which she praises as all TEENAGE SHRINE MAIDENs should, along with her ANCESTORS, the DREAM MAGICS and the dream ninja-raccoon Wuffles (it was ADORABLE). At some point the copy of SBURB her Aunt ordered will arrive and she will be encouraged to play more with her 'real' FRIENDS using her laptop (a sturdy affair covered in paper-wards and a giant sticker declaring that it TASTES AWFUL), possibly round their HOUSES.
Till then there are STUDIES to be done. Also, the internet.

A KITTEN sits on the sloping roof outside his windowsill, tapping his feet to the MUSIC on his headphones as he eats one of the TEMPLE CAFE's breakfast buns he got up specially to help make. It was worth the early start though, as now he has the rest of the day free. He is planning to drag his friend the BIRTHDAY GIRL out for SHOPPING and FUN in ARCADIA, and maybe use his ALLOWANCE to buy this new SBURB game.
He waves at an UMBRELLA TSUKUMOGAMI drifting by and picks up his own UMBRELLA. Time to see if the BIRTHDAY GIRL is AWAKE and ready for FUN, and if they can HELP people while they're out, so much the better...

The Outside has been strong in the currents in the last few weeks, meaning that there have been lots of deliveries of Outside dust to the shrine. A CART with "POzT" on the side in white paint, drawn by a HORSE with a single glittering blue THREAD braided into its mane, rattles into the courtyard. It's being driven by Tatiana, one of the wives of Captain Yurievich of the famed boat the Wittenberg, one of the Kings of Big Lake*. She beckons you over. "Morning, Aki. Mind giving me a hand unloading these Dust crates?" There are quite a few large parcels addressed to "The Vasili Shrine" on the cart. Most people in town don't have multiple wives, but it seems to work for them, so nobody minds too much.You can claim a bonus XP for your basic quest. Intentions are formed by picking a Skill (or Connection)+some amount of Willpower+sometimes an appropriate Bond. (Bonds only apply if there's opposition or an Obstacle.) If you don't have a Skill, you can still spend just Willpower. See the ladder on pp. 65 for how forming Intentions works. If you finish doing or completely give up on an Intention, you restore 1 Willpower. You can only run two Intentions at once.
Generally a net Intention of 2 (after subtracting whatever Obstacle the HG levies) is enough to accomplish a task at a basic level. Matty:There's a thud of someone landing on the roof behind you. It's a red-haired girl wearing a circlet of strawberry leaves and pearls; Rinley Yatskaya. Also known as Trouble. She stands on the roof with a cat's grace. "C'mon, Matty, hurry up! You're not sure what she's talking about this time, but she's waving a SBURB flyer, so it's a safe bet she wants to get a copy of the game too.

ZETO blinks blearily at the SCREEN, sipping slowly at the drink. "This is downstairs, Jenny," she mumbles absently, trying to REMEMBER what it was she was actually trying to do last night. Why a pumpkin? One of life's great MYSTERIES, no doubt. What was Jenny saying? Oh, yes, BREAKFAST. And... oh yeah, it is her BIRTHDAY, isn't it? Awesome! And SBURB is out today too, double Awesome!
As full consciousness creeps its way back into her - helped along of course by the DRINK (what was in this again?) - she pushes R on the KEYBOARD and spins her chair away from the workbench ready to head UPSTAIRS.

AMY sighs. Her posture straightens. Her expression morphs into one of polite neutrality as she decides that, yes, they are playing that game again. She sips her TEA politely and gives her AUNT a polite smile. "Why, I didn't know breakfast with family was supposed to be a formal affair..." She refrains from pointing out that whilst school has been cancelled, it's still a WORKDAY so her AUNT has better things to do than spend the morning nagging her. But she will, if she has to. Intent 4 (Onwards to something interesting!): Using Teenage Shrine Maiden (2 + 2 from Will, so 4) to passive-aggressively point out that she's perfectly capable of being a 'respectable' young lady. |

Zoro frowns. Being a yoing rat, he does not have sifficient VIM to knock over the stack of books by himself, but a RAT KNIGHT is never without another option. He whistles for his TRUSTY STEED to come and stand under the window while he drops onto its back. Of course, he immediately falls off due to his TRUSTY STEED being a SMALL EXITABLE DOG that immediately throws him from its back. Nevertheless he claims this as a FLAWLESS VICTORY. They say it's an omen, when things like this happen, but I like to think of it as he's promising me he'll come back again to claim it." She unloads another crate, placing it down beside the pile of others. "I think that's the lot for here." There doesn't seem to be a small, game-shaped package; they're all large Dust crates. Zeto:>Attempting retry... Insufficient grist."My Navigation Unit Appears To Be Malfunctioning. I Apologise..." J3-NNY observes, then picks up the mug and follows you upstairs. As you reach the hallway, you can see a large PARCEL wrapped in purple and gold paper, sitting in the middle of the sitting-room floor. Amy:She makes the point that you should always be practicing, because you never know when a prince will invite you to tea. However, she does indeed have better things to do. She leaves you with the instructions to finish clearing the table, and says she's left 'that new game' on the hallway table for you before she goes to get changed into her shrine-maiden robes. Zorro:Your TRUSTY STEED barks his approval and runs a few small circles before licking your face. You manage to calm him down enough to mount, and he clambers his way up to the roof, sniffing the breeze. The fresh air is coming in off Big Lake, and the sun shines with the bright light of a new day. It's a good day for adventure. Of course, at that point, your BLACKBERRY starts beeping. It wouldn't do to look too dramatic; you have to leave some glory for everyone else. My intent is for this to be someone calling you for help - maybe we can do a pesterlog in #townstuck at some point?

Aki looked back at the crates, "Is there any other mail? Or do I need to go to the post office to get my package?" If she did that could be irritating, but it's not like she didn't have time. Then again maybe this was just an express delivery ahead of the normal mail and she could get away with talking to her friends over PESTERCHUM while waiting... If she has to go and get her package, may I claim XP for unexpected difficulty in getting a copy? Additionally, would I be able to make a Discovery xp action to find something cool on the way? |

AMY remains polite whilst her AUNT leaves and cleans the table, putting everything away neatly. Then she breaks cover and darts into the hallway in search of the strangely shaped box that contains the SBURB. Running upstairs she starts the boot sequence on her LAPTOP and absently sets PESTERCHUM to load as she breaks open the GAME BOX and...
=> Reads SBURB MANUAL (If there is one)
